Casper Ruud, the Norwegian tennis star, is gearing up for his first-ever final at the Internazionali BNL D'Italia in Rome. The road to this momentous occasion hasn't been easy, but Ruud's determination and resilience have propelled him forward. As he prepares to face off against the formidable Jannik Sinner, Ruud's focus is on maintaining his composure and rising to the challenge.
A Familiar Opponent
Ruud's journey to the final is particularly intriguing given his previous encounter with Sinner. Last year, in the quarter-finals, Sinner dominated the match, dropping only one game to the Norwegian. This memory lingers in Ruud's mind, serving as a reminder of the formidable task that awaits him. Despite the daunting prospect of facing a home favourite, Ruud remains steadfast in his approach.
"I just have to try to approach it as any other match," Ruud stated, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining a level head. "Try not to think about the big wave in front, kind of with all the momentum he's building, all the confidence and the records that he's building and breaking. At the end of the day, he's human. I have to try to think that way as much as I can."
The Gap Between the Elite
Ruud acknowledges the significant gap that separates Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz from the rest of the field, including himself. The former World No. 2 reflects on his own journey, recognizing the challenges he faced in maintaining his ranking. He credits Sinner and Alcaraz's exceptional talent and unwavering work ethic as the key factors behind their success.
"I was one of the players who got my name into the discussion for a few years," Ruud shared, "but I was not able to follow up. I was outplayed by others. Then you have Jannik and Carlos, who have become sort of the unicorns that they have become. At times, I can be at home and wish that it were me and not them. At the same time, I'm realistic in thinking that they have something special in them. They also work very, very hard."
Rebuilding Confidence
Ruud's recent performances have been a testament to his determination to rebuild his confidence and form. He reached the quarter-finals in Madrid and is now in his first Rome final. His semi-final triumph in the Italian capital has propelled him to No. 17 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, a significant improvement from his previous ranking. Ruud's steady progress and unwavering focus on his game have been instrumental in his resurgence.
"I got off to a good start in the tournament and built some confidence from there," Ruud explained. "I think the match with [Jiri] Lehecka that I won in the third round was building momentum and confidence for me. From there, I've been trying to focus on the things that went well there and keep it going, improve even more if I can. Every day, I felt a bit better and better. The couple of sets against [Karen] Khachanov and today [against Luciano Darderi] are some of the best I've felt on court in a long time. So that's a good feeling."
As Ruud continues his journey towards the final, his unwavering determination and realistic perspective will be pivotal in shaping his performance. The tennis world eagerly awaits the outcome of this highly anticipated match, knowing that Ruud's resilience and focus will be tested to the utmost.
